Explore Your Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Options

When Original Medicare leaves some gaps in coverage, a Medicare Supplement planβ€”often called Medigapβ€”can help fill in those financial blanks. These plans are designed to assist with things like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Some even provide coverage for medical emergencies while traveling abroad.

Every Medigap plan is standardized and labeled (Plan A through Plan N), which means no matter which insurance company offers it, the benefits within each plan stay the same. What can vary is the monthly premium. Here's a quick overview of what each plan includes:

Plan A

A straightforward option that covers:

  • Part A hospital coinsurance

  • Hospice care coinsurance

  • Part B coinsurance/copayments

  • First 3 pints of blood

Plan B

Includes everything in Plan A, plus:

  • Coverage for the Medicare Part A deductible

Plan C

(Not available to those new to Medicare as of Jan 1, 2020)

  • Covers almost all out-of-pocket costs

  • Includes foreign travel emergency benefits

  • Excludes Part B excess charges

Plan D

  • Offers strong coverage for most Medicare-related costs

  • Does not cover Part B deductible or excess charges

  • Includes foreign travel emergency care

Plan F

(No longer available to new Medicare members starting Jan 1, 2020)

  • The most complete coverage available

  • Covers all deductibles, coinsurance, and Part B excess charges

  • Includes 80% of foreign travel emergency costs

Plan G

  • Offers coverage nearly identical to Plan F

  • The only difference: it doesn’t include the Part B deductible

  • Includes foreign travel emergency coverage

Plan K

  • Shares 50% of costs for things like:

    • Part B coinsurance

    • Hospice care

    • Skilled nursing care

    • First 3 pints of blood

  • Covers 100% of Part A hospital coinsurance

  • Has a yearly out-of-pocket limit

Plan L

  • Covers 75% of many Medicare-related costs

  • Offers the same out-of-pocket limit protection as Plan K

  • Good for those who want a mix of coverage and cost control

Plan M

  • Covers half of the Part A deductible

  • Includes full coverage for Part B coinsurance

  • 80% coverage for foreign travel emergencies

  • A middle-ground choice with some cost sharing

Plan N

  • One of the more popular plans

  • Covers most out-of-pocket costs except:

    • Part B deductible

    • Part B excess charges

  • Includes small copays for office and ER visits

  • Offers 80% foreign travel emergency coverage
